Marilyn takes over homes on reserve

Today, Marilyn Gabriel’s group, in a meeting led by Christine Loewen, and Erin Marshall, announced that they will retroactively end rent-to-own housing on reserve. Until now, members of reserve were able to take ownership of their homes after renting for a certain period of time. Many have been involved in rent-to-own for years, some chose to come to reserve because of this rent-to-own policy.

But without consulting band members, without convening a meeting of the LAC, and with just 3 days notice, Marilyn has double crossed these people, and taken control of their homes. They may stay for now, as renters, subject to whatever new rules she and her gang impose on them.

Taking the homes of Native people is the most colonial thing you can do - and it shows the utter hatred that Marilyn has for our Nation and our people.

This attack on our homes, and our people’s dreams of home ownership cannot be allowed to stand.

The Kwantlen Band Council, Brandon Gabriel, Victor Back, and Christopher Thomas will be meeting in an open session Thursday night at 6pm on Zoom. They will discuss what Marilyn has done, open the floor to people’s concerns, and then look at measures for stopping what she is doing.
